To ensure that the quality of the original recordings is not diminished too much by the MP3 compression process, and the audio clips are of reasonable duration, the file sizes have unfortunately to be in the region of 500kb. Nevertheless most downloads should only take around 2-3mins each with a 36-56k modem, so please be patient. We could always cut download times by reducing the sound quality or length of the clips - please let us know if you think we have got the balance right.

Playing the Clips

MP3 files can be played through a variety of programmes such as Microsoft Media Player or Winamp which often come pre-installed on PCs. Double-clicking on the file will normally launch the relevant programme and play the clip you have selected. If your PC doesn't have one of these players, click on the links below to download a FREE copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are MP3 files ?

MP3 is a way of storing audio in a digital format. By removing those parts of the sound or music that are virtually inaudible to the human ear, the MP3 process compresses the storage space required to less than one-tenth of its original size. This makes MP3 files ideal for use over the Internet by allowing 1 minute of audio to be downloaded in 4 or 5mins instead of 45mins or more. While the sound quality is not up to modern CD standard it can be comparable to records and cassettes.

How long will a file take to download ?

This will depend largely on the size of the file, the speed of your modem and the speed of your current Internet connection. As a very rough guide, a 52k modem will normally take just over 2 mins to download a 500kb file with a good Internet connection.

Can I listen to downloaded files more than once ?

Yes. Once the file is saved on your hard drive or other disk, you can play the sound clip as often as you like.

Why does my media player launch automatically when I try to download a file ?

Depending on how your system is set up your media player may launch itself automatically, download the file and play it without giving you an opportunity to save it for future use. If you are unsure, we would recommend downloading the file to disk using the "Save Target As" option referred to above.

Why are the clips so short ?

Even with MP3, each minute of audio requires around 1MB of file space. To avoid lengthy download times, while maintaining sound quality, we have restricted most clips to one verse of the relevant hymn.
